A photograph taken from the deck looking down and along the side of the tranport ship as a dead horse is winched over the side to be disposed of in the sea. A number of Indian solders can be seen leaning over the rails as the horse's body, suspended in a rope harness from a davit hook, is winched out over the side.
The photograph is captioned in white ink 'The first casualty dumping a dead horse from a Transport'.
Robert Wiles Simms joined the passenger/cargo ship Bandra (1913) at Glasgow on 4 March 1914 and departed for Bombay [Mumbai] on 12 March 1914. The ship was used during the war as a troop and horse transport ship.
