Nannie
Nannie, Cutty Sark’s figurehead. The Cutty Sark Preservation Society was established in 1952 to raise the funds to secure Cutty Sark’s future. The Society appealed for public donations and successfully raised enough to commission the construction of a dry dock and permanent home for Cutty Sark in Greenwich. The ship was floated in, on the first attempt, on 10 December 1954. An extensive restoration project then began. As part of the project, a new figurehead was commissioned. Leslie Arthur Wilcox was selected to design it and Arthur Levison chosen to carve it. The new figurehead was installed on the prow of the ship in 1957 in time for the ship’s opening to visitors. It remained there until 2021 when it was removed due to rot and a replacement figurehead installed. In October 2024, it was installed in the dry dock of Cutty Sark, adjacent to the main figurehead display.
