Nannie
Nannie, the figurehead’s detachable arm. The Cutty Sark Preservation Society commissioned Leslie Arthur Wilcox to design a new figurehead, to be based on the figurehead which was on the prow in the early 1950s. The figurehead was carved by Arthur Levison and installed in 1957 in time for the ship’s opening to visitors. It remained there until 2021 when it was removed due to rot and a replacement figurehead installed.
The outstretched arm of the original figurehead, is thought to have been detachable as it was particularly vulnerable to rough conditions at sea. This design element was retained for the version installed in 1957.
