Steel

A relic of Sir John Franklin's last expedition 1845-8. Steel found near Ross Cairn, Point Victory, King William Island on 2nd June 1859 by the McClintock Search Expedition 1857-9. Found by William Jones, the dog driver of Hobson's party. The steel has a curved handle. They would have been used to strike sparks to light a fire. The steel is engraved 'Relics of Sir J. Franklin found in the boat at Point Victory & brought to England by Mr William Jones Clerk of the ship 'Fox' Captn McClintock RN Septr 1859'
