Flint and steel

A relic of Sir John Franklin's last expedition 1845-48. Flint and steel found near Ross Cairn, Point Victory, King William Island on 2 June 1859 by the McClintock Search Expedition 1857-59. It was found by William Jones, the dog driver of Hobson's party.

The flint is shaped and polished and the steel has a curved handle. They would have been used to strike sparks to light a fire. It is engraved 'Relics of Sir J. Franklin found in the boat at Point Victory & brought to England by Mr William Jones Clerk of the ship 'Fox' Captn McClintock RN Septr 1859'. The inscription confuses two sites: Point Victory and the boat at Erebus Bay.

The flint and steel were presented to the Royal Naval Museum by Mr W. C. West of Greenwich with a postcard signed by Sir F. L. McClintock verifying the facts as stated.
