Photographic print

An uncaptioned studio photograph showing Zhan Shichai standing next to a seated Chinese woman, possibly Kin Foo. Both are wearing clothes based on traditional Chinese costume and holding fans.

Born in China in the 1840s, Zhan had giantism (a hormonal condition resulting in excessive growth). He travelled to Britain in the 1860s and became famous as a stage performer. He travelled around Europe, the USA and Australia. His stage names included 'Chang the Chinese Giant' and 'Chang Woo Gow'. Stage shows featuring people with physical deformities as 'attractions' were common during the Victorian era.

After the death of Kin Foo in 1871, he married a Liverpudlian woman named Catherine Santley, with whom he had two sons (named Edwin and Ernest). He later settled in Bourmouth, owned a shop and tea room. He died in 1893.

Less is known about Kin Foo, who was also born in China and who toured with Zhan as his wife. There is some speculation as to whether they were actually married or whether it was convenient for them to appear on stage as a couple.
