Hastings lugger Dick and Jack

The Hastings lugger Dick and Jack (regd RX115) is seen here bow-on. The foot of its stem is drilled to accommodate chains by which the boat would be winched ashore when it is beached. On the starboard side a ladder rests on the gunwale. Hoisted on the foremast is a drying net. The nearly flat floor of the type allows the stability of this lugger to be maintained when aground with the use of timber baulks placed beneath the keel and rubbing strakes, rather than legs. The same stability is required when such beach boats are being launched or retrieved. Part of a similar Hastings lugger, with only the last two digits of its registration (RX106) visible, is seen to the left of the main subject. To the right of the Dick and Jack a woman is sitting on the beach, looking out to sea.
