Hastings luggers

This view of a Hastings lugger, which may be the same RX198 seen in negative P75386, shows its lute stern close-up, but the boat's name is indistinct. The boat is equipped with a three-blade propeller to port of the keel, and a smaller two-blade propeller on the starboard side. Notwithstanding this auxiliary power, the boat has sweeps roped onto the port topsides. The rudder hanging from the concave section of the lute stern has a flat bottom somewhat above the keel, which like the rubbing strakes, is clearly steel- or iron-banded to resist the abrasion of beaching and launching across Hastings' shingle shore.
