Sketch of a naval vessel the 'Tweed' entering Portsmouth, with figures in rowing boats and on the shore in the foreground, and women hanging out washing, with inscriptions
Mounted in album with PAE9907-PAE9942, PAE9944-PAE9964.; Medium includes brown wash and graphite.; Page 36.
Moses's 'Marine Sketchbook' (1824) print from this drawing is PAD7996. Its caption adds that the ship was bringing in a cargo worth £1,000,000, probably of silver being imported from Mexico for the Bank of England, though exact details remain to be found. The inscription at the bottom here reads 'The Tweed coming into Portsmouth': those at the top here are unrelated notes on the names of a tallow chandler and 'Terry's cheap liquour store', possibly also in Portsmouth. [PvdM 8/23]
