Sr Edward Hawke Knight of the most Honble Order of the Bath, & Rear Admiral of the White Squadron of His Majesty's Fleet
A three-quarter-length portrait of Edward Hawke (1705–1781) wearing a coat with large decorations around the buttons and the ribbon and star of the Order of the Bath. The sitter holds a telescope in his left hand and leans against a broken column with a distant view of ships in the background. Lettered beneath the image with the title and the publication line: ‘Sr. Edward Hawke, Knight of the most Honble. Order of the Bath, & Rear Admiral of the White Squadron of His Majesty’s Fleet. / Printed for John Bowles and Son at the Black Horse in Cornhil London.’ The plate was originally engraved by John Faber the Younger of around 1748 after Richard Wilson’s portrait of Thomas Smith (see PAF3417), painted around 1744 (see BHC3032). In the print, the plate has been reworked as a portrait of Edward Hawke, through the alteration of the inscription, the addition of the ribbon and star of the Order of the Bath and the reengraving of the sitter’s head. The likeness of Hawke used in this print appears to have been modelled on George Knapton’s portrait, as engraved by James Macardell in 1747/8 (see PAF3453). (Updated May 2019.)
