Cassandra. Engraved by Caroline Watson (engraver to Her Majesty) from the original Picture

Print. This is based on an oval format oil portrait (63.5 cms vertical height) of Emma Hart, later Lady Hamilton, as Cassandra by Romney which was painted for or at least first owned by his friend and later biographer, the poet William Hayley (1745-1820): it then went down by descent among his family and heirs until sold at Christie's in May 1888. Hayley was also admired by Emma who claimed to have heeded the advice given in his didactic poem of 1781, the 'Triumph of Temper' in which he sought to teach young women the virtues of a pleasant nature. The oil shows her bust length, with a white robe over her right shoulder, the left breast exposed and her arms raised. her right hand holds the laurel wreath on her head, the left arm goes out of the picture at two-o'clock invisible from just above the elbow. It most recently appeared as no. 31 in the '2012 Recent Acquisitions' catalogue of the London dealer Rafael Valls of Duke Street, St James's. [PvdM 2/12]
