Inscribed in the lower margin, as title (though possibly not by Ellis - see PAH0148 for comparative example); signed by the artist and dated, l.r below the image 'W. Ellis fect: 1778'. Unalaska is one of the chain of Aleutian Islands stretching west from southern Alaska. Cook's ships 'Resolution' and 'Discovery' called at Samgoonoodha (English Harbour) between 28 June and 2 July 1778 during his third Pacific voyage (1776-80), before passing round Unalaska to the east to head north through the Bering Strait. This view was taken, presumably from 'Discovery', by the ship's artistic surgeon's mate and is one of ten by him in the collection (PAH0144-PAH0153). The rather simplified ship at left is also presumably 'Resolution'. This drawing is not listed in Joppien and Smith's 'The Art of Captain Cook's Voyages' (vol.
