Launch of the Falmouth, 1752
A drawing commemorating the launch of the East Indiaman 'Falmouth', from Perry's - later Green's- Blackwall Yard. The inscription reads: The FALMOUTH Captn THO[ma]s FIELD Launcht at Blackwall the .14th of August 1752 Length P[e]r Keel 108[Feet]-9[Ins] , Breadth 34[Feet], Burthen 668[Tonns] 65/94' . The ship is shown in three positions, with a starboard quarter and starboard bow view to left and right flanking one from port broadside. The vessel centre left on the slip may also be the ship at an earlier stage. Some of the buildings of the Yard are also visible, but not Blackwall Yard House. This does feature in another similar drawing by the same hand, of an unidentified ship, shown to the Museum in October 2012, which bears the damaged signature 'M Topping delin'. He can probably be identified as Michael Topping, a supervisory officer there by 1771. From 1747/48 he may have previously been organist at St Mary's Church, Rotherhithe, and perhaps the man of that name who was buried in Bunhill Fields in September 1789. It is possible that he was the father of Michael Topping (1747-96) who became the chief marine surveyor at Madras and the East India Company's astronomer.
