Moose skin moccasin with quillwork embroidery.
Moose skin moccasin with quillwork embroidery. The seams are edged with bird quill with a narrow basket weave panel round the vamp. This type of moccasin with a narrow flap round the ankle is usually said to be Eastern Athapaskan but the floral style of the embroidery is Métis. Thie pair to this moccasin is AAA9292.
This moccasin belonged to Captain George Back (1796-1878). It was probably collected during one of the three overland journeys that he took part in to explore the north coast of America. The expeditions relied on the fur-trading posts and personnel for support. Their aims were scientific and geographical, the search for the North-West Passage was a high priority. Part of his ethnographic collection was bequeathed to Greenwich Hospital in 1900 by Mrs Eliza Back, widow of Sir George's nephew - the Reverend Henry Back.
