HMS Hawkins (1917), China Station, 1919-1921

A black lacquered album, with spine in poor condition, containing 531 photographic prints, most of them captioned, relating to the commission of HMS Hawkins (1917) on the China Station between 1919 and 1921. There are also a further 85 prints loose in an envelope that are part of the album. See Album 322 for the same subject matter relating to the commission of Hawkins.

The main themes are:

1) The departure of Hawkins in July 1919 from Chatham Dockyad.
2) The voyage out to China including views of Malta, Suez Canal, Aden, Colombo (Ceylon), Penang, and Hongkong.
3) Views of the places visited on the cruise including Singapore, Malay States, Penang, Java, Amoy, Yokohama, Tokyo, Kobe, Kyoto, Osaka, Wei-Hei-Wei, the Great Wall, Shan-hai-kuan, and other places.
4) Views on deck such as group photographs, crossing the line ceremony, football team, divers on Hawkins, visit of Chinese naval officers
5) Shore-based activities such as Shanghai Race Course, the arrival of Lt. Ferrian the Italian aviator flying from Rome to Tokyo, visit to the Imperial Japanese Gardans in Tokyo, a railway journey from Yokohoma to Enoshima with stops along the way, visit to Kyoto including the palace and gardens and temples.
6) Views of ships including British warships, Sampans, and Junks
7) Life on the China Station at Wei-Hei-Wei with the annual competitions for gunnery, torpedo, boat pulling and sailing.
