Minion RR9 (1872)

Scale 1:24. A plan with accompanying table of offsets showing the body plan grid, stern profile and stem profile of the bawley Minion RR9 (1872).

"She was built in 1872 and was worked for most of her life here on the Medway by her owner; in his latter life she lay on a mooring up near Chatham & Strood, as could be understood he was reluctant to sell her so she got worse and worse and he finally sold her to Neil for the required, 1£. She was towed down to the "Clubs Anchorage" and placed in a mud berth... believe during her construction a part of the deadwood of the original "Minion" was built into her so claiming her original build date of 1872" [quote from e-mail dated 7 April 2009 by Ted Penny]

"I am related to the previous owner before latest construction and knew and indeed worked on the boat. I was advised that the boat was built earlier than 1872 but date unknown although from memory I was told she came from Maldon and was registered there (possibly MN15 but not sure). I am not sure when she came to the Medway but she would have been owned by 2 brothers Leonard and Arthur Wadhams in 1920s. Originally built in clinker with a wet well she was doubled at some time so the skin thickness was about 4.5", I believe I viewed the launch of the current vessel and clinker construction was re-instated. At some point she was hit by the Medway Queen at Strood pier and put out of action, the repairs carried out locally were not to the same standard of the doubling. I am not sure if recovered but the boat also had a central hand operated capstan (vertical axis) with the name "Minion" carved into the bronze top/gear mechanism most other boats of this ilk tended to have a horizontal axis winch for hauling nets (as opposed to forward windlass for anchor chain).
