Glass bottle with glass stopper, containing yellow residue. Labelled "Tinct. Benz. Co". Compound Tincture of Benzoin. Bark extract. Tincture of benzoin is a pungent solution of benzoin resin in alcohol. A similar preparation called Friar's Balsam or Compound Benzoin Tincture (USP) contains, in addition, Cape aloes and storax (liquidambar resin). Savory, 'A Companion to the Medicine Chest' 1836, p.90: “Tincture of Bark, Compound (Huxham’s) This tincture has long been in great repute, as one of the best preparations of bark; but the discovery of quinine has shewn that it is not so good as has been supposed. The dose is from one to three drachms. It is a grateful stomachic in dysopepsia."
