One of a pair of epaulettes belonging to Commodore Oliver of the Royal Indian Navy. The epaulette is of a wide band of gold lace backed by paper over sheet metal. The border is of alternating dull and bright twisted purl with a very narrow band of gold twist on either side. At the end is a gilt brass button of the following pattern: indented rope twist border encricling a narrow raised border encirincling a riased foul anchor below the crest of a rampant guardant lion holding a crown. A black cotton/silk tying tap with metal aigulettes is looped through the button, this is used to secure it to the coat.

The crescent is of alternating dark and bright metal thread wound around a thick wood core. It has a border of either side of alternating dull and bright loosely twisted purl. From the crescent are 20 large gold bullions on the outside and 18 small gold bullions on the inside. All are secured at hte bototm by means of old wire. On the epaulette are the following insignia from the cresence to the strap: A large foul anchor of silver plate and purl over a vellum core backed by white wool; a flaming grenade of silver purl backed by blue wool; and a base metal stamped rampant guardant lion holding a crown.

UNDERSIDE: The underside of the epaulette features a partial bonnet covered in blue cotton belbet and covered on the outside with gold and yellow silk lace. The crescent is padded and covered with blue cotton velvet. At its base are two metal eyes with a black silk tying tape. At the end of the strap is a metal clad button hole with metal eyes on either side to secure the tying tape. The underside of the strap is covered with leather and has the maker's label: WILSON/LATE BODLEY & ETTY/30 & 31 Lombard Street/London.
