Indian Navy uniform: pattern 1828
One of a pair of epaulettes belonging to Commodore Robert Oliver (1783–1848), of the Indian Navy.
As the Indian Navy evolved from what was the marine of the Honourable East India Company, the epaulettes feature their insignia. The epaulettes are of gold lace and purl over sheet metal. The bullions are fastened over a stiff bonnet and the undersides are covered with padded velvet and leather. The underside of the strap has the maker’s label: ‘WILSON/LATE BODLEY & ETTY/30 & 31 Lombard Street/London’.
