Buckley, HMS Crescent (1892), Cape of Good Hope Station, 1904-1907

This album contains photographs relating to Buckley’s career in HMS Crescent (1892) from 1904-1907 while on the Cape of Good Hope Station. Included are views of South Africa, Mauritius, Zanzibar and the Seychelles. There are many photographs of HMS Crescent’s officers, as well as photographs of garden parties at Admiralty House, Durban, the naval sanatorium at Simonstown and a group photograph of the Sultan of Zanzibar with the Duke of Connaught as well as other high ranking officials. Buckley was promoted to Midshipman in 1902, Sub Lieutenant,1907, Lieutenant, 30 July 1908, Lt.Cdr, 30 July 1916, Cdr, 30 June 1920, Captain, 31 December 1927 and Rear Admiral, 10 June 1939. He was awarded the Order of Leopold II in 1949 for distinguished service in Belgium and was created CB in 1941. Admiral Buckley specialised in gunnery and was Assistant Director, Naval Ordnance 1928-30.

This album depicts the agreeable life led by officers on the Cape of Good Hope station at the beginning of the 20thC with many social events, sports days, trips ashore and picnics.
