Snuff box
Snuff box belonging to Sir Robert Seppings (1767-1840). A carved tortoiseshell snuff box, circular in shape with a screw-on lid. It is carved in high relief. The lid shows the stern of HMS 'Asia' surrounded by flowers and foliage and based on E.W. Cooke's engraving of 1828. Chinese figures and buildings are carved on the base. Inside the lid is a crest with the motto: 'IMMOTUS' and below it 'R.S'. The snuff box has a silk-covered outer box. Robert Seppings was a naval architect who introduced the stronger, round stern on naval vessels.
