Diploma box

Box presented to Admiral of the Fleet Andrew Browne Cunningham, Viscount Cunningham of Hyndhope (1883-1963). A plain cedar box with panelled sides and two cartouches on the front painted blue and gold, one with a crest, the other with the monogram 'ABC'. It contains a vellum scroll admitting Cunningham as Honorary Freeman of the Borough of Hove, September 5th 1945. Inside the lid is an ebony panel carved and inscribed: 'This diploma box, made of timber from a bombed building at Malta Dockyard, is presented to Sir Admiral Cunningham Bt. GCB, DSO, as a token of appreciation of his great national services on the occasion of his election to Honorary Membership of the Institution of Civil Engineers.'
