Letters from John Short to Ella Ambrose January to March 1935.

Aboard SS GURNA, 3rd to 7th January, he writes about his work on the engines, as well as shopping trips, dinners, the process of fumigating the hold with sulphur, his shipmates laughing at him for wearing full uniform to keep warm, and his annoyance at coal dust having settled on a set of new books. The next letters cover daily life on the voyage from Calcutta to Chittagong, Bangladesh from 9th to 16th January; then from Chittagong to Bassein (Pathein), Burma from 16th to 26th Jan. They travel to Rangoon between 27th January and 3rd February, then to Madras between 4th and 10th February. From 11th to 28th February they travel down to Sri Lanka, before heading up the Indian coast to Bombay. 1st to 4th March he travels from Bombay to Calicut (Kozhikode), and then continues south during the last letter, which begins on 8 March and is incomplete.
