Letters from John Short to Ella Ambrose April to June 1935.

He is aboard SS HOMEFIELD, in Kidderpore Docks near Calcutta from 26th to 29th April. Still in Calcutta, he is aboard RMS KARAPARA from 16th to 22nd May, and is in poor health, worrying about the amount of money he is spending on medical treatments. 24th to 30th May he is in good health. On the 28th there is an accident while fitting safety valves on one of the boilers, and one of Short's greasers is injured. On the 30th he describes the route the ship is about to embark upon: 'Calcutta, Rangoon, Penang, Port Swettenam, Singapore and then back the same way to Calcutta or in other words the Malay Straits Mail'. There is a letter dated SS HATIMURA Thursday 28th May 1935, which must be a mistake as the 28th was a Tuesday. Short is aboard RMS KARAPARA, in Rangoon on 4th June, which is his 28th birthday. In his letter of 15th June, he describes the cargo aboard this passenger vessel which includes eight polo ponies, many tropical birds and two orangutans destined for a zoo in Rangoon. From 29th June to 1st July, RMS KARAPARA travels from Calcutta to Rangoon.
