Aboard RMS KARAPARA, Rangoon, 2nd July he continues writing a 'daily report', as is his habit, but wonders if Ambrose finds it boring. Travelling from Rangoon to Penang, 4th to 10th July, Short writes about the ship's cat, 'Mary', about the beauty of the tropical forest he sees on the approach to Port Swettenham (Port Klang), and a description of his cabin. From Singapore to Rangoon 11th to 17th July, he writes about saving money and trying to give up smoking, about his disliking for the Second Mate, and seasickness. From Rangoon to Calcutta on 18th to 24th July, he replies to Ambrose, writing that if a job as a draughtsman at Supermarine came up he 'could rest content and put all my heart into my work'. He is suffering from seasickness still, writing 'There is nothing I can tell you about this trip up from Rangoon dear, the whole thing has been more or less a nightmare'. From Calcutta to Rangoon, 25th to 31st July, two old shipmates of his turn up at different points, unexpectedly. From Rangoon to Calcutta Short writes on 19th and then 27th August, having been very ill during the intervening days after a trip to the dentist. 15th September he updates Ambrose on news from his family. 21st September he describes a little bird (from his description it sounds like a hummingbird) which had found its way onto the ship. Short's letter of 30th September encloses a photograph of a woman in smart clothing (presumably Ambrose?).
