3rd April JS replies to EA’s 12th March letter, from Karachi, aboard SS HATIMURA. He writes that he has a film in his camera so she can expect more ‘snaps’ soon, and about his sadness about working over Easter. They have unloaded a cargo of coal, washed the ship down, and reloaded with cotton and hides to return to Calcutta. 24th April on voyage from Colombo to Pondicherry, he writes about communication issues in the BIS Company, and about the process of entering exams and getting work when he returns to England. 28th April he is in Madras. 8th May, he apologises for not answering her letters, he has been working everyday including weekends: ‘we are on survey and don’t we know it’. They have reloaded again with coal and the dust is maddening: ‘we breathe it, eat it, sleep in it, bath in it and damned near say our prayers in it’. 30th May aboard SS GARMULA at Rangoon, his friends ashore gave him a farewell party the previous night, and he expects to be home by July. 1st June settling into the new ship on the voyage to Jaffnapatam (Sri Lanka), he is very pleased with the engine room ‘wonderfully clean, even the boilers’. He writes about his family, and plans for their up-coming wedding. 12th June, on the voyage from Colombo to Cochin, he talks of his growing excitement about the wedding, treating his neuralgia with a new medicine, and how he has bound her letters from the past 6 years into bundles. On the 24th June he is aboard SS VASNA, on his last sailing orders, before travelling first class on P&O SS RANPURA due in London on 16th July.
