Letter from George Rodney Mundy to his father, written after the expedition against the Sultan of Brunei, 1846.

Letter written by Mundy to his father General Godfrey Basil Meynell Mundy, completed when he was on the frigate HMS IRIS (1840), at sea off Labuan Island on 26 July 1846. It gives an account of proceedings since 8 July, when vessels of the East Indies Squadron were fired on by batteries while ascending the river to Brunei Town and sent forces ashore to put the guns out of future use. Mundy was put in command of an expeditionary force to follow traces of the Sultan (Omar Ali Saifuddin II) and his army who had fled into the interior. He was accompanied by James Brooke (the Rajah of Sarawak). See MDY/101/2 for another letter covering these events.
