Letter from George Rodney Mundy to his uncle, written after the expedition against the Sultan of Brunei, 1846.

Letter from Mundy to his uncle Vice-Admiral Sir George Mundy at Grosvenor Street West, Eaton Square, London, dated 25 July 1846 (with envelope). It was written on the frigate HMS IRIS (1840) at sea off Labuan Island, and describes events from 8 July onwards, including the capture of Brunei Town and the retreat of the Sultan (Omar Ali Saifuddin II) with his army into the interior. Mundy lists vessels in the East Indies Squadron and confirms that with the departure of Rear-Admiral Sir Thomas Cochrane for China, he was left as senior officer in the Borneo Straits. Enclosed is a small sketch (with linen backing), showing the Brunei River and surrounding forts. See MDY/101/1 for another letter covering these events.
