In-letters and orders received by the Navy Board

Extract of a letter from Captain Baker sent from the NEWCASTLE at Spithead 12 April 1693. Peter Bignell was turned over on board as our Surgeon's Mate. He is 39 and was not very well satisfied since it was against his will, but my reason for exchanging a seaman for him with the HOPE is that my Surgeon, being a young man, has never been a Surgeon on any ship before, nor at sea, and what practice he had before was in the country. My officers and people seem to dislike him and we signified to the Navy Board that he might be removed to a smaller ship and a man of more experience sent here. They gave directions to the Surgeon General at Surgeons Hall, but he being a servant of one of the Wardens of it, I was refused. Signed by Captain Baker, Commander of the NEWCASTLE.
