Surgeon Lieutenant-Commander William Astle Ryan, 1905-1942.

A small collection of papers relating to the naval service of William Astle Ryan on the Africa and China stations between 1934 and 1937.

Administrative / biographical background
Ryan was born at Cahore, County Wexford, Ireland, in 1905. After graduating from Trinity College in Dublin with degrees in medicine and surgery, he entered the Royal Navy for short service. He was commissioned as a surgeon lieutenant in 1932 and then served on the sloop HMS MILFORD (1928) on the Africa station. While in China with the Yangtze Flotilla between 1935 and 1937, his vessel HMS LADYBIRD (1916) was shelled by Japanese artillery at Wuhu. Ryan was promoted to the rank of surgeon lieutenant-commander in 1938 and just prior to the Second World War was serving on the sloop HMS HASTINGS (1930), parent ship of the Fishery Protection and Minesweeping Flotilla. He died, aged 36, while on active service at Port of Spain, Trinidad, in 1942.
