Vice Admiral Sir James M. Pipon KBE, CB (1882-1971) joined the Royal Navy in 1897 and rose to the rank of Rear Admiral before his retirement in 1936, when he was made Vice Admiral on the retirement list. He served as Naval Attaché to the British Embassies in Paris and Brussels between 1925 and 1928, and was Chief of Staff to the Commander in Chief at Plymouth between 1929 and 1930. He was Commodore of the Devonport barracks from 1932-4. He then served as Rear Admiral in Charge and Admiral Superintendent of HM Dockyard, Gibraltar, between 1935-7. He was brought out of retirement in the Second World War, and was the Senior British Naval Officer at the Suez Canal between 1940-2 and flag officer in charge, Southampton, between 1942-5, before retiring for the second time in 1948. Admiral Mark Kerr (1864-1944) was a Navy and Air Force Officer. He was Commander in Chief to British Adriatic Squadron in 1916 and was then seconded to the Air Board to assist in the formation of the Air Ministry and Royal Air Force.
