Assorted correspondence, receipts and press cuttings 1836-1851

Includes specifications and estimates for the building of lifeboats including correspondence from James Beeching (1788-1858) whose “self-righting lifeboat” became the standard model for lifeboats until the 20th century (this correspondence is enclosed in paper folder marked “Beeching”). File also comprises: two pressing cuttings; from The Pembrokeshire Herald and General Advertiser (November 1844) with a printed letter concerning the efficiency of a new design of lifeboat and another, accompanied by a letter, regarding a lecture delivered at Southwold Town Hall by F.W. Ellis RN (Royal Navy) on “The Lifeboat and on other means used for the preservation from Shipwreck” and the presentation of a medal to John Fish, at the same event, for bravery shown in rescuing two men from the shipwreck of THE URY in 1848. Letters on the headed paper of the Shipwrecked Fishermen and Mariners Benevolent Society are also included.
