Thornycroft & Co Ltd, also his position as Honorary Vice-President of the Royal Institution of Naval Architects (RINA): Technical reports, folded plans and blueprints, photographs of testing models and calculations for vessels designed and constructed by the Thornycroft company, circa 1942-1966. Thornycroft publicity material including brochures and specification leaflets for motor boats and marine engines. Administrative / biographical background
Kenneth Coules Barnaby was born at Chiswick, London, into a family of shipwrights and naval architects. His father was Sydney Walker Barnaby (1855-1925) and his grandfather was Sir Nathaniel Barnaby (1829-1915). He started his apprenticeship with John I. Thornycroft & Co Ltd in 1904. He simultaneously studied for a BSc at the Central Technical College in South Kensington. He was then employed in the shipbuilding yards of Chantiers et Ateliers Augustin-Normand at Le Havre, John Brown & Co Ltd at Clydebank, then Costiera of Rio de Janeiro. He was appointed naval architect at Thornycroft in succession to his father in 1924 and spent over 30 years in this position. He retired to become honorary advisor to the firm in 1955. His published works included historical surveys of the Royal Institution of Naval Architects and Thornycroft shipbuilders to mark their centenaries in 1960 and 1964.
