Incomplete series of The Camp Magazine, First Naval Brigade, Groningen in Holland, April 1915 to November 1918. Ephemera and photographs including postcards sent and received by Russell while interned at Groningen. Bonework plaques and medal passed to W&A Department.

Prior to the First World War, Russell worked as a shunter for the Metropolitan District Railway and lived in Hounslow, London. In August 1914 he enlisted with the London division of the RNVR and went to Belgium with the Benbow Battalion, First Naval Brigade. Between October 1914 and November 1918 he was interned with his unit in a camp nicknamed 'HMS Timbertown' at Groningen in Holland. Internees passed their time taking part in sports and producing handicrafts for commercial sale. Russell won a medal for his entry at an arts and crafts exhibition. Despite this confinement, Russell married at a local church in July 1916 and was repatriated for an appendix operation at Chatham Naval Hospital between October and December 1917. At the end of January 1919 he was demobilised at Crystal Palace. He spent the remainder of his working life with London Transport District Railway.
