Administrative / biographical background
Hewitt entered the navy as a cadet on 15 July 1871 and was promoted to lieutenant on 30 June 1882 serving on the REPULSE (1883), IRIS (1883-1887), LILY (1887-1889), WARSPITE (1890), CONQUEROR (1893), SIRIUS (1893-1894) and RACER (1894). He was appointed commander on 1 January 1898 serving on the ROYAL OAK (1896), PRINCE GEORGE (1896-1898) and the CALEDONIA (1899). He later served on the JUNO (1905) and BLAKE (1905-1906), being promoted Captain on 30 June 1901. He retired from the navy in 1906 and was placed on the retired list as rear-admiral in 1911. He was involved in the military operations in the Eastern Soudan at Suakin between 1884 and 1885 when lieutenant of the IRIS. He received the Egyptian medal, the Khedive's bronze star for his conduct.
