He was appointed to Royal Naval College, Greenwich in 1907 and on completion in 1908 was appointed to the WARRIOR, an armoured cruiser, on 30 June, in the Firth of Forth. He then was appointed to the battleship DOMINION on 3 August 1910 as junior engineer. The ship was inspected by Jellicoe. In 1912, Villar was appointed to join the submarine service and was appointed to the ARROGANT and DOLPHIN on 15 May 1912, joing Fort Blockhouse for training A, B and C class submarines. Joined the E5 submarine in 1913 escorted by the ADAMANT, was present during a large explosion that took place in the engine-room, Villar took part in World War One in the E5 U-boat and took part in the Battle of Heligoland. He became senior-engineer of the MAIDSTONE, 1913 to 1914, and later in 1916 oversaw the building of airships north of Bedford. Villar successfully persuaded the Admiralty to prevent steamlining gondola engines into the main envelope, which was considered too dangerous a design. He joined the Admiralty for duty in the Engineer-in-Chief Department between 29 December 1916 and 18 April 1917. Villar served in the AMBROSE and DOLPHIN submarines as engineer-lieutenant commander between 24 November 1917 and 29 March 1921. He was promoted engineer-commander on 30 March 1921; was aircraft carrier chief-engineer of the HERMES between 17 February 1925 and 19 April 1927. Whilst serving as engineering captain (promoted 31 December 1932) in the submarine DOLPHIN between 1933 and 1935, he severly critised the design of submarines and a court of enquiry took place (the collection contains documents relating to this). Villar was placed on the retired list on 30 June 1939 and later joined Thornycroft & Co. as engineer manager in 1939.
