Administrative / biographical background
John Haggard joined the Navy and the training ship BRITANNIA as a cadet in 1865. The following year he became a midshipman, spending 4 years on the SATELITTE and gunnery training on the EXCELLENT. He was rated Sub-Lieutenant in1870, serving on the RESEARCH, DEFENCE and TENEDOS. He passed for lieutenant in June 1876. He was retired as unfit for further service because of his eyesight in January 1882 but went on to become British vice consul at Zanzibar in 1883 and HM Consul at Roumea (New Caledonia) in 1899 and at Malaya in May 1904.
