Letters to 2nd Earl of Shelburne, June 1778 to July 1780.

A series of letters from John Jervis while on board the FOUDROYANT just after the French declared war in support of the American Independence. Subjects covered include a battle of the coast of Brittany dated 20 June 1778; a heavy fog that separated FOUNDROYANT from the rest of the fleet just as they were going to engage the French Battle ships; orders to seize Spanish vessels after a paper written by the Spanish Ambassador handed to Lord Weymouth which in the Earl’s opinion amounts to a declaration of war dated 20 June 1779; and a letter dated 1 September 1779 which states that one of the English coasting vessels drifted too close to Le Comte d’Orvillers fleet and was captured in full view and mortification of the English Fleet.
