Pilot's flying log book of Flight Sub-Lieutenant Douglas Parode Capper, Royal Naval Air Service, 1916-1917.

The log book records the flights Capper undertook while under instruction, with details of the type of aeroplane flown, time spent in the air and height reached plus remarks on his flying and the conditions. A photocopy of a photograph of Capper in front of an aeroplane is interleaved in the log.

Administrative / biographical background
Douglas Capper was born on Spectacle Island, in Sydney Harbour, Australia, the son of Henry Douglas Capper and Louisa Parode. His father was a Lieutenant Commander in the Navy, and the Officer-in-Charge of the Ordance Department at Spectacle Island at the time of Douglas' birth (Henry's autobiography is available in the Caird Library, item PBD5215). Douglas joined the Navy as a Boy Artificer in July 1914, and transferred to the Royal Naval Air Service on the 25th July 1916. He then transferred to the Royal Air Force as a Lieutenant on the 1st April 1918, and served in the Air Force until October 1919.
