Commonplace workbook kept by William Spink, RN, including mathematical calculations and methods for calculating at sea.

Includes mathermatical problems, plain sailing calculations, reduction of time, a page of hand drawn flag standards, calculations for gunners, astronomical calculations. There is an observation on 15 May 1686 involving a Mr Butty and two other men running very fast on an otherwise deserted and uninhabited island. They ran up a hill and away from sight. This was observed while William Spink and others were on an island [Strom Bloe?] hunting for wild rabbits. The volume has 'William Spink his book 1697' and at another point 'William Spink his book 1705' written within. It is illustrated throughout with examples of ships, flags, castles, men holding standards and numerous calculation tables and charts.
