Phillipps-Cole

The collection forms part of the Phillipps collection purchased by Sir James Caird in 1946. Nine of the fifteen volumes contain routine naval administrative papers, which include two volumes on gunnery. The first, 1690 to 1778, is composed of demands for, and issues of, gunners' stores; the second gives details on the expenditure of gunners' stores in certain ships between 1805 and 1806. The remaining six volumes make up a miscellaneous autograph collection, in which are about thirty letters, 1807 to 1820, from Lady Frances Nelson (1758-1831) relating to her financial and legal affairs.

Administrative / biographical background
Robert Cole (d.1866?), a solicitor, was one of the main manuscript collectors of the nineteenth century. Some of his own correspondence is bound in with the papers.
