Administrative / biographical background
James Reveley was born on 18 August 1832 at Hastings, Sussex. He joined the Navy as an able seaman on board HMS HORNET in 1857 and became a ships' master in 1867. Included amongst his other appointments were HMS ABOUKIR between 1866 and 1868; HMS CORDELIA in 1868; HMS AGINCOURT and HMS PEMBROKE in 1869. He was awarded the China Medal, Falsham Class on 8 September 1867.
