Stokes, John Lort, Admiral, 1812-1885

Watercolours relating to natural history includes a Kiwi (13.25" x 8"); HMS ACHERON sounding from near Stephens Island, New Zealand, 61 fms (10.5" x 7.5"); marine gastropod with young (10.5" x 8.5"); bivalve mollusc (8.5" x 6") initialled J.W.H; dried fern, in paper with 'Fern from Captain Wakefield's...', Wairau Plain, April '51' in Stokes's hand, Mrs Natusch notes the 'fern exhibit is very interesting. Captain Arthur Wakefield was killed in the Wairau 'massacre' (a confrontation over land between the New Zealand Company and Te Rauparaha and Rangihaeata) in the year 1844. The fern looks like Pteridium esculentum: New Zealand bracken.'
