Administrative / biographical background
The MOUNT STEWART (official number 98559) was one of two clippers built in 1891 for the Australian wool trade for Donald, Rose & Co. By 1913 these were the last 2 sailing vessels still plying the Sydney wool trade. While the CROMDALE was wrecked near Baast Point, off the Lizard on the night of 23 May 1913, the MOUNT STEWART continued in service throughout the First World War, until December 1924 when she was eventually broken up in Nantes, having remained continuously in the same ownership.
