Battle of Dogger Bank : the first dreadnought engagement, January
1915
/Tobias R. Philbin.
"On January 24, 1915, a German naval force commanded by Admiral Franz von Hipper conducted a raid on British fishing fleets in the area of the Dogger Banks. The force was engaged by a British force, which had been alerted by a decoded radio intercept. The ensuing battle would prove to be the largest and longest surface engagement until the Battle of Jutland the following summer. While the Germans lost an armored cruiser with heavy loss of life and Hipper's flagship was almost sunk, confusion in executing orders allowed the Germans to escape. The British considered the battle a victory; but the Germans had learned important lessons and they would be better prepared for the next encounter with the British fleet at Jutand. Tobias Philbin's Battle of Dogger Bank provides a keen analytical description of the battle and its place in the naval history of World War I."--Provided by the publisher.

1915
: the First World War at sea in photographs /Phil Carradice.
"Submarines and blockades dominated the war at sea in 1915. The major event was the sinking by U-20 of the Lusitania, which edged America closer to war. The Germans had announced a blockade of Britain in February, using submarines to sink and harry shipping. A British blockade of Germany was announced in March in retaliation. Using its surface fleet to stop neutral vessels, the British attempt was more successful. The British submarine force was also successful, commanders leading patrols into the Black Sea and the Baltic Sea. Surface ship engagements would be fought by battlecruisers at the Battle of the Dogger Bank, and by cruisers off the coast of Chile as the German warship Dresden was sunk in the Pacific. On the east coast of Africa, the raider Kèonigsberg was sunk in the war's first instance of sea-air cooperation. Attempts to bully Turkey into surrendering saw numerous Allied warships sunk off the Dardanelles and an amphibious landing took place there in an attempt to create a supply route into the Black Sea. By the end of the year it was obvious that the invasion of Turkey had failed and the soldiers were evacuated. At the same time, Allied shipping was being used to evacuate the Serbian army from the coast of Albania, the biggest seaborne evacuation that there had ever been until Dunkirk."--Provided by the publisher.

Britain and the mine, 1900-
1915
: culture, strategy and international law /Richard Dunley.
"This book examines Britain's complex relationship with the mine in the years 1900-1915. The development of mine warfare represented a unique mix of challenges and opportunities for Britain in the years before the First World War. The mine represented the antithesis of British maritime culture in material form, and attempts were made to limit its use under international law. At the same time, mine warfare offered the Royal Navy a solution to its most difficult strategic problem. Richard Dunley explores the contested position occupied by the mine in the attitudes of British policy makers, and in doing so sheds new light on the overlapping worlds of culture, strategy and international law."--Provided by the publisher.

Dardanelles : a midshipman's diary,
1915
-16 /H.M. Denham.
"This diary, richly illustrated by unpublished photographs and plans, is an important addition to the Gallipoli archive. Henry Denham's account reveals the courage, waste, muddle and triumph that are associated with the names of Gallipoli and Dardanelles. Denham, well known to cruising people and travelers for his Mediterranean Sea-Guides, began his colourful career in the Royal Navy at the naval colleges of Osborne and Dartmouth. It was as a cadet the he first went to sea on the outbreak of the war in 1914: he found himself aboard HMS Agamemnon and within weeks was steaming down the English Channel for an unknown destination. On reaching the Dardanelles midshipmen were prohibited - for security reasons - from keeping official journals. Denham kept a private diary in which he recorded day-to-day combat as well as outspoken comments on his seniors and on the actions in which he was involved. His powers as an observer and recorder are seen clearly: his keen pen-portraits of personalities, British and foreign, and his noting of the minutiae of naval warfare put you aboard an old broadside battleship during one of the last set piece actions, played out according to the old tactics. He saw much of the action aloft in the precarious and often violently lively crow's-nest and sometimes had fine views of Turkish gunners and occasional infantry charges. On the sea he commanded a steam picket-boat in the Suvla Bay landings -- a splendid observation post for the foibles and failings of the commanders."--dust jacket.
