clipper master : the story of John Smith of the Lahloo
Born in Anstruther, Fife in 1823 John Smith began his seafaring career as a boy on a Greenland whaler. Rising through the ranks he went on to command the Min and Lahloo, tea clippers, and the Maju which sank in bad weather off the Isle of Lewis on her maiden voyage with the loss of all hands. The author also covers the story of Smith's widow and daughters as well as that of Captain Alexander Rodger, the owner of the Min and Lahloo, and Captain John Keay a fellow tea clipper master.

The last embassy : the Dutch mission of 1795 and the forgotten history of western encounters with
China
"George Macartney's disastrous 1793 mission to China plays a central role in the prevailing narrative of modern Sino-European relations. Summarily dismissed by the Qing court, Macartney failed in nearly all of his objectives, perhaps setting the stage for the Opium Wars of the 19th century and the mistrust that still marks the relationship today. But not all European encounters with China were disastrous. The Last Embassy tells the story of the Dutch mission of 1795, bringing to light a dramatic but little-known episode that transforms our understanding of the history of China and the West. Drawing on a wealth of archival material, Tonio Andrade paints a panoramic and multifaceted portrait of an age marked by intrigues and war. China was on the brink of rebellion. Enduring a harrowing voyage, the Dutch mission was to be the last European diplomatic delegation ever received in the traditional Chinese court. Andrade shows how, in contrast to the British emissaries, the Dutch were men with deep knowledge of Asia who respected regional diplomatic norms and were committed to understanding China on its own terms. The Last Embassy reveals that the Qing court, mischaracterized as arrogant and narrow-minded by British diplomats and historians, was in fact open, flexible, curious, and very cosmopolitan."--Provided by the publisher.

: three Scots in the making of Britain's global empire /Jessica Hanser.
"This book delves into the lives of three Scottish private traders - George Smith of Bombay, George Smith of Canton, and George Smith of Madras - and uses them as lenses through which to explore the inner workings of Britain's imperial expansion and global network of trade, revealing how an unstable credit system and a financial crisis ultimately led to greater British intervention in India and China."--Provided by the publisher.

Blue
China
: single female migration to colonial Australia /Jan Gothard.
"Almost a hundred thousand single women emigrated from Britain to the Australian colonies between 1850 and 1900. Colonial governments paid for their passages. The popular assumption is that most of these women came out to find husbands, but Jan Gothard establishes that the female immigration schemes were devised to ease the desperate shortage of domestic servants in the colonies. The attitudes of the time strictly curtailed their mobility and initiative. Shipboard matrons went to great lengths to keep their charges away from all men. On arrival, the young women were isolated from their fellow-colonists, and left ignorant about the wages they could have demanded in a hungry market. Blue China shows how women made their own use of institutions designed to control them. Brought to life by fascinating excerpts from journals and diaries written by the women themselves."--Provided by the publisher.

Gunboats, empire and the
China
Station : the Royal Navy in 1920s East Asia /Matthew Heaslip.
"Examining Britain's imperial outposts in 1920s East Asia, this book explores the changes and challenges affecting the Royal Navy's third largest fleet, the China Station, as its crews fought to hold back the changing tides of fortune. Bridging the gap between high level naval strategy and everyday imperial culture, Heaslip highlights the importance of the China Station to the British imperial system, foreign policy and East Asian geopolitics, while also revealing the lived experiences of these imperial outposts. Following their immersion into a new world and the challenges they encountered along the way, it considers how its naval officers were perceived by the Chinese populations of the ports they visited, how the two communities interacted and what this meant at a time of 'peace'. Against the changing nature of Britain's informal empire in the 1920s, Gunboats, Empire and the China Station highlights the complex nature of naval operations in-between major conflicts, and calls into question how peaceful this peacetime truly was."--Provided by publisher.
