Bright paradise : Victorian scientific travellers /Peter Raby. This book details the expeditions of some of the greatest Victorian scientific travellers and considers how their journeys, discoveries and writing helped to reshape the Victorian view of the world. The great burst of scientific exploration in the 19th century saw naturalists and travellers launching expeditions across the globe - often lasting years - in a bid to discover, collect and catalogue the world's flora and fauna and to solve questions about unexplored parts of the earth: Where was the source of the Nile?; Did the Niger flow eastwards or westwards? What lay at the centre of Australia? Was there a North-West Passage? Grace Darling : Victorian heroine /Hugh Cunningham. Grace Darling (1815-1842) was the daughter of the keeper of Longstone Lighthouse on the Farne Isles. In September 1838 she rowed out with her father to rescue survivors from the shipwrecked steamer Forfarshire. Within days of the rescue she was regarded as a national heroine, a rare accolade for a woman in Victorian times. This book examines her life and the reasons for her fame and celebrity, which have endured into the 21st century. Grace's image was used to sell books, soap and chocolates; the book's illustrations include advertising material, paintings and photographs of commemorative items.
