The world in the Viking Age / edited by Soeren M. Sindbaek & Athena Trakadas.
"The Viking Age was ignited by the art of building seaworthy sailing ships and the skills to sail them on the open sea. The growth in seafaring, trade, piracy, and exploration that began to gather momentum during the 8th century CE was not limited to Europe's northern seas, however. Ships, laden with cargo and with seafarers who met foreign cultures, created unexpected connections between people from the Arctic Circle to the oceans south of the equator. Travel accounts have handed down glimpses of these voyages to the present day. However, it is archaeological discoveries in particular which uncover the story of Viking-Age seafaring and voyages of exploration. The World in the Viking Age reveals a global history concerning ships, people and objects on the move. It is a story that challenges entrenched ideas about the past and present, and the skills and opportunities of previous generations."--Provided by the publisher.

The Cargospeed story / Bruce Peter.
"Between the 1960s and the 1980s, Cargospeed Equipment Ltd, in Greenock on the Clyde, designed and manufactured vehicle deck access equipment and platform deck systems for numerous well-known ferries. It also fabricated cranes and hatch covers for cargo vessels. The companys origins were in the family-owned shipyard of George Brown (Marine) Ltd, the history of which forms the initial section of the book. The subsequent development of Cargospeed involved design innovation by the company heir, Jack Brown, whose novel ideas were to feature on many well- known British and foreign ships. Apart from ferries, the vessels for which Cargospeed equipment was supplied ranged naval auxiliaries to the Cunard liner Queen Elizabeth 2. Profusely illustrated with unpublished photographs, The Cargospeed Story fills a gap in knowledge about an important, but under-recognised aspect of modern merchant shipping and shipbuilding."--Provided by the publisher.

British battleships of World War One / R A Burt.
"This superb reference book achieved the status of 'classic' soon after its first publication in 1986; it was soon out of print and is now one of the most sought-after naval reference books on the secondhand market. It presents, in one superb volume, the complete technical history of British capital ship design and construction during the dreadnought era. One hundred years ago at Jutland, Dogger Bank, Heligoland Bight and the first battle for the Falklands, might squadrons of these great armoured ships fought their German counterparts for command of the seas. Beginning with Dreadnought, the book continues to the end of the First World War, and all of the fifty dreadnoughts, 'super-dreadnoughts' and battlecruisers that served the Royal Navy during this era are described and superbly illustrated with photographs and line drawings. Each class of ship is described in detail so that design origins, and technical and operational factors, are discussed alongside characteristics, with special emphasis on armament, armour and machinery. Fully detailed data tables are included for every class, and more than 500 photographs and line drawings illustrate the text. A delight for the historian, enthusiast and ship modeller, it is a volume that is already regarded as an essential reference work for this most significant era in naval history and ship design."--Provided by the publisher.

The history of the Nordic map : from myths to reality /Ulla Ehrensvard.
"History of the Nordic Map by Professor Ulla Ehrensvèard offers, for the first time, a thorough survey of the development of Nordic map-making. This book covers all Scandinavian countries and their former possessions, describing the development of all relevant types of domestic mapping as well as connections between Scandinavia and the well-known European map-makers and publishers." - Professor Esko Hèakli "Professor Ulla Ehrensvèard comprehensive History of the Nordic Map is largely based on her own research, which has both uncovered forgotten treasures in foreign archives, given new interpretations of map contents, traced map-makers and artists, and revealed unknown relationships. It is truly an inexhaustible reference book, an inspiring textbook and a book to present to any map-lover." - Staffan Helmfrid, Professor Emeritus of Cultural Geography and Economic Geography, and former Rector of Stockholm University"--From back cover of book.

East of Suez : liners to Australia in the 1950s and 1960s /William H. Miller & Tim Noble.
"The advent of the jet airliner all but killed the liner on the Atlantic route but the ships to Australia survived into the 1970s, not just on the liner trade but also carrying emigrants from the UK and Europe to Australia. Many a tenpound- pom was carried on the ships of Orient, P&O, Shaw Savill and the foreign vessels of the Chandris and Sitmar lines, as well as other Italian ships too. Bill Miller and Tim Noble tell the story of the liners that travelled East of Suez. Ships such as Canberra, Orsova, Oriana, Britannis, Ellinis and Guglielmo Marconi are all included in the rare and unseen images."--Provided by the publisher.

Don't shoot the albatross! : nautical myths and superstitions /by Jonathan Eyers.
"Sailors are a notoriously superstitious lot - even if some won't admit it. Years of taking to the water, at the mercy of uncontrollable (and sometimes deadly) forces, have led even the wisest to seek ways of influencing the gods or fate. From bad omens and odd rituals to lucky tokens and forbidden words, the superstitions of the sea are legion. Many of these superstitions have refused to go away and quite a few have entered the general public consciousness. Some are amusing in their own right, others have fascinating origins, whilst for many there are bizarre anecdotal incidents which would appear to lend credence to these arcane beliefs. Illustrated with quirky cartoons, this book explores nautical superstitions from all over the world in an informative yet entertaining way."--Back cover.

Between monopoly and free trade : the English East India Company, 1600-1757 /Emily Erikson.
"The English East India Company was one of the most powerful and enduring organizations in history. Between Monopoly and Free Trade locates the source of that success in the innovative policy by which the Company's Court of Directors granted employees the right to pursue their own commercial interests while in the firm's employ. Exploring trade network dynamics, decision-making processes, and ports and organizational context, Emily Erikson demonstrates why the English East India Company was a dominant force in the expansion of trade between Europe and Asia, and she sheds light on the related problems of why England experienced rapid economic development and how the relationship between Europe and Asia shifted in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. Though the Company held a monopoly on English overseas trade to Asia, the Court of Directors extended the right to trade in Asia to their employees, creating an unusual situation in which employees worked both for themselves and for the Company as overseas merchants. Building on the organizational infrastructure of the Company and the sophisticated commercial institutions of the markets of the East, employees constructed a cohesive internal network of peer communications that directed English trading ships during their voyages. This network integrated Company operations, encouraged innovation, and increased the Company's flexibility, adaptability, and responsiveness to local circumstance. Between Monopoly and Free Trade highlights the dynamic potential of social networks in the early modern era."--Provided by the publisher.

Was Australia charted before 1606? : the Java la Grande inscriptions /William A.R. Richardson.
"Dutchman Willem Janszoon's arrival on the shores of Cape York in 1606 is widely regarded as the first reliably documented non-Aboriginal arrival on Australia's shores. This book examines the evidence that Portuguese, French, Chinese and others were earlier visitors. Author William A.R. Richardson, Associate Professor at Flinders University, South Australia, examines the evidence for these claims and presents his own case. Much of the Portuguese claim rests on the evidence of a series of sixteenth-century French maps which show a charted landmass - Jave la Grande, south of Indonesia - which some have identified as Australia. Richardson devotes much of his book to considering this issue in detail, in particular the information that place-names can provide in identification. This book is illustrated throughout with charts and maps, some of which are beautifully embellished, showcasing the exquisite art and skill of the mapmakers of the day." -- Provided by the publisher.
