Lymington-Yarmouth : the new generation /John Hendy.
"Sponsored by Wightlink, this 48 page booklet charts the history of the Western Solent route and specifically deals with the evolution of the three new 'Wight' Class ferries which are being built in Croatia. 2008 marked the 70th anniversary of the entry into service of the route's very first car ferry, the revolutionary Lymington which replaced the old tow boat method of shipping cars to the Isle of Wight. Since then the service has gone from strength to strength and with the trio of long-serving 'C' class ferries now coming to the end of their active careers, the three new 'Wight' Class ferries will introduce a completely new standard to this historic link."--Provided by the publisher.

Voices from the Arctic convoys / Peter C. Brown.
"With the invasion of Russia by Germany in 1941, Britain gained a new ally and a responsibility to provide materials for the new front. More than four million tonnes of supplies such as tanks, fighters, bombers, ammunition, raw materials and food were transported to Russia during a four-year period. The cost was high and by May 1945, the campaign had seen the loss of 104 merchant ships and sixteen military vessels, and the thousands of seamen they carried. The Arctic Route was the most arduous of all convoy routes. The ever-present threat of attack from German U-boats and Luftwaffe bombers such as the dreaded Focke-Wulf Fw 200 Condor were not all the Arctic convoys had to contend with. They had to deal with severe cold, storms, fog, ice floes and waves so huge they tore at the ships' armour plating."--Back cover.

Lusitania : an illustrated biography /J. Kent Layton.
"It is now a century since the Lusitania sank. For seven and a half years after her maiden voyage, she crossed the rugged North Atlantic with punctuality and dependability. She had fast become a living legend, the ship of choice for many of the transatlantic travelers. Since her sinking on May 7, 1915, however, her wondrous career and technological marvels have largely been neglected. Instead, the focus has shifted to her political importance, and on numerous conspiracy theories about her last voyage and sinking. This illustrated biography of the Lusitania discusses her entire story, from her conception and birth on the Clyde to her career and, finally, her tragic demise off the coast of Ireland; it reveals her as she has never been seen before. Prepare to take a journey back in time... step aboard the decks of one of the world's largest, finest, fastest and most beloved ocean liners, and relive her history in all its splendor. Today the Lusitania is remembered mostly for her tragic sinking on May 7, 1915, and the political ramifications of that disaster. That sinking, however, was merely the startling and grim finale to an incredibly eventful life, the death of one legend and the beginning of another. This book relives the entire life of the Lusitania, from her beginnings to her demise; it is an unprecedented biography of the great ship and the people who sailed on her. From the ship's technical design features to the greatest events in her career, her story is told in both words and pictures. Hundreds of photographs and illustrations, breathtaking new artwork, and all-new plans of the ship reveal the liner as never before."--dust jacket.

The River Welland, shipping & mariners of Spalding / by Keith Seaton.
In its heyday Spalding was a busy commercial port, with a shipping industry that affected a large majority of the local population. But today that rich history is almost forgotten and the town is known mainly for its agricultural produce. Keith Seaton nostalgically seeks to recover that lost past, beginning with the River Welland of Roman times and traversing history up to the early twentieth century, when river traffic began to decline. The Industrial Revolution was a boom period for the waterway, and as such special attention is given to the master mariners of this important period. Using key sources such as census and shipping records, local family history records, maps and fascinating illustrations, The River Welland: Shipping & Mariners of Spalding creates a rich tapestry of the heritage of this once-thriving shipping area. KEITH SEATON was born and bred in Spalding, Lincolnshire. After joining the RAMC in 1959 for National Service that took him to Malaya, he spent a career in saw mills. He has previously written for the Chain Bridge Forge Museum on subjects relating to family history and local shipping history."--Provided by the publisher.

The unseen Lusitania : the ship in rare illustrations /Eric Sauder.
"Lost to a German torpedo on 7 May 1915, Cunard's RMS Lusitania captured the world's imagination when she entered service in 1907. Not only was she was the largest ship in the world, but she was also revolutionary in design as well as being a record breaker. Lusitania is now sadly remembered for her tragic destruction, sinking in eighteen minutes with the loss of around 1,200 souls. Through never-before-seen material, historian Eric Sauder brings RMS Lusitania to life once again. Filled with vivid, unseen photographs and illustrations from Eric's extensive private collection, this absorbing read will transport the reader back 100 years to a time when opulent Ships of State were the only way to cross the Atlantic."--Provided by the publisher.
