Island nation : a history of Australians and the sea /Frank Broeze.
"Island Nation traces the profound, diverse and all-embracing influence of the sea on Australian society - an influence that extends far beyond the coastline. In this story of the interaction of people and the sea, three major issues emerge: controlling sea space, taming distance, and living with the sea. In exploring these issues in all their diversity, Island Nation ranges widely, encompassing the birth of an Australian 'Monroe Doctrine', the development of unique economic and political institutions, the role of surfing and the growth of tourism, the impact of the sea on Australian art, 'ships of shame' and very much else besides."--Jacket.

20th century naval dockyards : Devonport and Portsmouth characterisation report /Naval Dockyards Society
"This extensive report is the product of three years of sustained archival and field research into the C20 built environment of these dockyards by members of the Naval Dockyards Society, completed to Historic England standards. It contains 650 maps, plans, models and photographs, many in colour, and is enriched by discussions with many institutions, societies and individuals. It places C20 dockyards within historical, military, industrial, material, personnel, engineering and architectural contexts. Developing the local, national and international profiles of Devonport and Portsmouth dockyards, it adds to our knowledge and understanding of why and how they changed during the C20 and initiates future research by asking questions."--Provided by the publisher.

Churchill's greatest fear : the Battle of the Atlantic 3 September 1939 to 7 May 1945 /Richard Doherty.
"The Battle of the Atlantic (Churchill's term) was arguably the pivotal campaign of the Second World War ? it was certainly the longest starting with the sinking of RMS Athenia on 3 September 1939 and ending with the torpedoing of SS Avon Dale on 7 May 1945. This superbly researched work covers all the major aspects of The Battle, balancing the initial advantages of Admiral Doenitz's U-Boat force, the introduction of the convoy system, the role of the opposing surface fleets and air forces, relative strengths and the all important technical developments. Intelligence particularly the Bletchley Park intercepts played an increasingly important part in the final outcome. The author concludes that May 1943 was the moment when the Allies seized the initiative and, despite desperate German efforts, never lost their advantage. Using official records, personal accounts and a wealth of historical research, this work gives the reader a splendidly concise yet broad account of the course of the campaign, the men who fought it on both sides and the critical moments and analysis of the outcome."--Provided by the publisher.

The Battle of Jutland / John Brooks.
"This is a major new account of the Battle of Jutland, the key naval battle of the First World War in which the British Grand Fleet engaged the German High Seas Fleet off the coast of Denmark in 1916. Beginning with the building of the two fleets, John Brooks reveals the key technologies employed, from ammunition, gunnery and fire control, to signalling and torpedoes, as well as the opposing commanders' tactical expectations and battle orders. In describing Jutland's five major phases, he offers important new interpretations of the battle itself and how the outcome was influenced by technology, as well as the tactics and leadership of the principal commanders, with the reliability of their own accounts of the fighting reassessed. The book draws on contemporary sources which have rarely been cited in previous accounts, including the despatches of both the British and German formations, along with official records, letters and memoirs"--

The wreck of the Penguin / Bruce E. Collins.
"New Zealanders vividly remember the Wahine wreck, in which 51 people died. An even more tragic shipwreck occurred 60 years earlier, not far from where the Wahine went down. In 1909 the Penguin sank near Wellington with the loss of 72 lives, among them many women and children. Until now the full story of this calamity has never been told - the drama and despair of that wild night in Cook Strait and the acts of fortitude and tenacity that ensued. One heroine was Ada Hannam, the only female survivor, who overcame dreadful odds but lost her entire family. The Penguin has never been found, and mystery surrounds the cause and exact location of the sinking. Was it Thoms Rock, or did the Penguin hit the hulk of the Rio Loge? Was Captain Naylor unfairly blamed for the wreck? Many of the answers are in this book; others lie deep in Cook Strait, waiting to be discovered. This is Bruce Collins' third maritime book. The first, in 1991, was the dramatic story of the wreck of the sailing ship Surat which has etched its way into Otago folklore. The second, in 1995, was Rocks, Reefs and Sandbars, a definitive history of Otago shipwrecks." --Provided by the publisher.

German commerce raiders, 1914-18 / Ryan K. Noppen.
"This is the story of Germany's commerce raiders of World War I, the surface ships that were supposed to starve the British Isles of the vast cargoes of vital resources being shipped from the furthest reaches of the Empire. To that end pre-war German naval strategists allocated a number of cruisers and armed, fast ocean liners, as well as a complex and globe-spanning supply network to support them - known as the Etappe network. This book, drawing on technical illustrations and the author's exhaustive research, explains the often overlooked role that the commerce raiders played in World War I. Whilst exploring the design and development of the ships, it also describes their operational history, how they tied up a disproportionate amount of the British fleet on lengthy pursuits, and how certain raiders such as the SMS Emden were able to wreak havoc across the oceans."--Provided by the publisher.

The moon and the western imagination / Scott L. Montgomery
"From early perceptions of the Moon as an abode of divine forces, humanity has in turn accepted the mathematized Moon of the Greeks, the naturalistic lunar portrait of Jan van Eyck, and the telescopic view of Galileo. Scott Montgomery has produced a richly detailed analysis of how the Moon has been visualized in Western culture through the ages, revealing the faces it has presented to philosophers, writers, artists, and scientists for nearly three millennia. To do this, he has drawn on a wide array of sources that illustrate mankind's changing concept of the nature and significance of heavenly bodies from classical antiquity to the dawn of modern science."--Jacket.

Remembering the chunnel beaters : The Pride of Dover and the Pride of Calais /John Hendy
"In 1987, Townsend Thoresen's Pride of Dover and Pride of Calais were the first of a new generation of super ferry and represented their owner's response to the building of the Channel Tunnel. There were those who had warned that the opening of the tunnel would bring an end to the traditional cross-Channel trades, and in a bold move to counter this threat, the new ships were labelled the 'Chunnel Beaters'. Sadly their entry into service was overshadowed by the English Channel's worst ever ferry disaster and new owners P&O lost little time in creating P&O European Ferries whose dark blue hulls and funnels would remain throughout the new ships' illustrious careers. Impressive upgrades to their passenger accommodation followed, introducing the iconic P&O branding which set a benchmark for quality that their competitors were quite unable to match."--Provided by the publisher.
